Covering over 4,800 hectares, the Mannar Bird Sanctuary, also known as the Vankalai Lagoon or Vankalai Sanctuary, is a vital refuge for a diverse range of migratory birds. Designated as a sanctuary by the Department of Wildlife Conservation in 2008, it features a variety of ecosystems, including mangroves, salt marshes, lagoons, waterholes, and grasslands, creating ideal habitats for birdlife. The field visit was guided by Edison Marynathan, an expert in migratory birds and mangrove restoration marine and coastal environmentalist from the Mannar district of Northern Province. Event was taken place in February, 2025 with a participation of 22 DIMO Nature Club members. The main objective of the visit was to get an exposure to the season of Flamingos and other migratory bird species.
