On 18 February 2026, DIMO Nature Club organized a field visit to Gothatuwa Wetland, an urban wetland located close to DIMO. The visit provided members with an opportunity to explore the natural ecosystem within the area and gain a deeper understanding of the ecological importance of urban wetlands. Gothatuwa Wetland Park, inaugurated in 2024, provides recreational spaces for cycling and hiking while also supporting environmental education initiatives focused on aquatic invasive plant management, tree planting, and solid waste collection.

Together with the Centre for Citizen Science team and guides from the Department of Wildlife Conservation, members observed a variety of bird species, including the Crimson-fronted Barbet, an endemic bird species found in Sri Lanka. The visit also highlighted the vital role of wetlands in flood control, carbon sequestration, and habitat restoration, particularly within an urban environment such as Colombo. The experience strengthened awareness of the importance of protecting urban wetlands and preserving biodiversity for future generations.
