Bird Watching Anawilundawa Ramsar Wetland 2023

To gain hands-on experience in bird observation and avian diversity, DIMO employees through the DIMO Nature Club organized a two-day field excursion to the Anawilundawa Wetland Sanctuary in December 2023. Covering an area of 1,397 hectares, Anawilundawa is one of Sri Lanka’s six designated Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Sites). The sanctuary is considered unique for the convergence of three distinct ecosystems: forest wetlands (including mangrove and freshwater swamps), the coastal saltwater ecosystem, and freshwater lakes.

The sanctuary also benefits from an ancient system of large man-made tanks built in the 12th century. It is home to more than 150 species of birds, 20 species of mammals, 70 species of butterflies, and over 50% of Sri Lanka’s freshwater fish species. A total of 26 DIMO Nature Club members participated in the visit, which was guided by bird expert Mr. Dulan Vidanapathirana.
