Under the DIMO “Lassana Hetak” sustainability initiative, DIMO continued its commitment to environmental education by conducting the fifth session of the “Living in a Wetland Capital City” series as an immersive, experiential learning programme at Diyasaru Wetland Park.
Delivered in partnership with “Greensphere Pvt Ltd” and the “LOVE A TREE” Foundation, the field visit provided urban schoolchildren with first-hand exposure to a functioning wetland ecosystem. A total of 65 students from Sri Siddhartha Maha Vidyalaya, Udahamulla participated, gaining practical insights into the ecological and social value of Colombo’s wetlands.
The session was led by Narmadha Dangampola of Greensphere Nature Studies, with the support of the school principal, and focused on the critical role wetlands play in sustaining biodiversity and mitigating floods—an especially timely topic in the context of recent flooding events affecting the city. Through guided exploration and observation, students were encouraged to understand wetlands not merely as green spaces, but as vital natural infrastructure supporting urban resilience.
Beyond awareness, the programme sought to build a lasting personal connection between young minds and their natural surroundings, inspiring students to become environmental ambassadors within their homes and communities. Through Lassana Hetak, DIMO continues to invest in nurturing responsible future generations while actively contributing to the protection and sustainability of Sri Lanka’s natural ecosystems.
