DIMO Nature Club organized a field excursion to Wilpattu National Park On July 2026, providing members with an opportunity to explore one of Sri Lanka’s most important natural landscapes and gain a deeper understanding of its unique ecosystems and wildlife. The excursion was guided by Prageeth Gunarathna, a member of the DIMO Nature Club.

As Sri Lanka’s largest and oldest national park, Wilpattu is a globally significant ecosystem recognized under the Ramsar Convention for its unique wetland characteristics. The park is renowned for its network of more than 60 villus natural, rainwater-fed lakes surrounded by sandy margins that change significantly with the seasons. This distinctive landscape forms an important hydrological network within Sri Lanka’s dry zone and supports diverse wildlife, including the Sri Lankan Leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) and Sloth Bear. The field visit provided valuable insights into dry-zone biodiversity, wetland ecosystems, and the importance of conserving these habitats and the wildlife they support.
