Field Visit to Mannar – Flamingo Watching 2025

Covering over 4,800 hectares, the Mannar Bird Sanctuary, also known as the Vankalai Lagoon or Vankalai Sanctuary, is a vital refuge for a diverse range of migratory birds. Designated as a sanctuary by the Department of Wildlife Conservation in 2008, it features a variety of ecosystems, including mangroves, salt marshes, lagoons, waterholes, and grasslands, creating ideal habitats for birdlife.

As part of DIMO Tribe’s employee well-being and engagement initiatives, DIMO facilitated a fully company-funded field visit for members of the DIMO Nature Club. The visit was guided by Edison Marynathan, an expert in migratory birds and mangrove restoration, and a marine and coastal environmentalist from the Mannar District in the Northern Province. Conducted in February 2025, the field visit saw the participation of 22 DIMO Nature Club members, with the primary objective of providing first-hand exposure to the flamingo season and other migratory bird species.
