Plantseeds Private Limited, a subsidiary of DIMO, introduced a new maize seed variety called ‘722 Salli Karala’ to the local market recently.
The first sale of this new maize seed variety was made to Mr. Ranjith Pandithage at DIMO head office by Mr. Priyanga Dematawa, Mr. Hemal Atapattu and the Plantseeds team. Mr. Gahanath Pandithage, Mr. Suresh Gooneratne, Mr. Asanga Ranasinghe and Mrs Dilrukshi Kurukulasuriya also participated at this event.
722 Salli Karala is a maize variety that tolerates diseases and drought which suits cultivation in any geographical area with an average yield of 10,000 – 13,563 Kg/Ha. A special feature of this maize variety is that it can be harvested with its nice orange grain colour, within 105 to 120 days. Maize is the most important coarse grain, for which around 100,000 Ha of land area is devoted annually, the second highest extent of land next to rice. Maize is mainly used for animal feeds, human consumption and other related cereal food. The Ministry of Agriculture has launched a special program to encourage the farmers to cultivate maize to a broader extent.
An integrated communication campaign to popularize the new seed variety in the country was also launched parallal to the introduction. This includes a radio campaign in Neth FM, field promotions with its Brand Ambassador – Lucion Pushparaj (a professional bodybuilder) and farmer training programs around the country. Under the campaign ‘Sitawamu Dinamu’, a special promotion was also introduced for the famers. Famers who purchase the new seeds variety, will be able to take part at the ‘Sitawamu Dinamu’ contest and win a Swaraj tractor, a two-wheel tractor and many more gifts. Farmers also will be able to enjoy special discounts for Penergetic products with natural soil enhancer when purchasing this new maize seed variety.
