A Special Repair of MTU Engines in Maldives
Tuesday, September 10th, 2019
The TMS team successfully completed a complex repair of two MTU engines of a Yacht based at a remote island in Maldives. Several shipyards were reluctant to undertake this repair, due to the very specific repair requirements of the owners. The yacht design has not provided engine room access for the engines to be taken out during an overhaul. Hence the ship hull needed to be cut open to take the engines out, which the owners did not want to attempt, which could have affected the appearance of this super luxury Yacht.
Hence the TMS team came up with an innovative idea to fabricate a special tool, in order to turn the engine inside the engine room and carry out overhauling of both engines. Although repairs of this nature is carried out in dry docks or Slipways at very high costs, the TMS team carried out this activity while the Vessel was afloat. One engine was completely seized due to oil starvation, damaging the crank shaft and engine block. The TMS team was once again successful in salvaging the engine block by carrying out precision line boring of the crankcase, saving a fair cost for the customer.
After completion of the overhaul, sea trials were carried out and the Vessel successfully achieved the design speed of 24 Knots. The owners were totally satisfied with the repair done by the TMS team and their efforts were much appreciated.
