Sangupiddy Bridge

Sangupiddy Bridge, spanning Jaffna Lagoon in Northern Sri Lanka, connects Sangupiddy in the Kilinochchi District with Karaitivu in the Jaffna District and is one of the only two road links to the Jaffna Peninsula. A causeway was initially planned in 1932 during British rule, but it faced opposition. However, following the end of the civil war, this steel girder bridge, measuring 223.8m, was completed in 2011 after decades of planning and delays. It significantly reduced travel time between Jaffna and the mainland by providing an alternative route to Elephant Pass. An important feature of the bridge is its high, arched overpass, specifically designed to allow fishing boats to pass through without obstruction. Beyond its practical importance, the bridge offers scenic views of Jaffna Lagoon, strengthening economic and social ties in the region.
