Manampitiya Bridge

Manampitiya Bridge, measuring 302m, spans Mahaweli River in the Polonnaruwa District, connecting the North Central Province at Polonnaruwa and the Eastern Province at Batticaloa. Before the opening of Kinniya Bridge in 2009, Manampitiya Bridge was the longest bridge in Sri Lanka. It was originally built as a railway bridge in 1922, and later expanded in 2007 with a modern road bridge. It is also known as the Sri Lanka-Japan Friendship Peace Bridge. This important transport link and historic landmark continues to serve both rail and road traffic, with a unique arrangement of the railway track running directly through the centre of the road. This bridge is also featured on the 50-rupee note, highlighting its significance.
