Nine Arch Bridge, often called the ‘Bridge in the Sky’, is a striking railway bridge located between the towns of Ella and Demodara in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands. Built in 1921, it measures 91m long and features nine graceful stone arches constructed without steel, due to World War I shortages. Designed to handle a sharp curve and steep slope, the bridge showcases impressive engineering and craftsmanship. Local folklore speaks of a builder named Appuhami, who proved the bridge’s strength by lying beneath it during the first train crossing. Nestled among lush tea plantations and rolling hills, the bridge is a leading tourist attraction in Ella.
