New Kelani Bridge, formerly known as the Japanese-Sri Lanka Friendship Bridge and sometimes known as Golden Gate Kalyani, is a striking modern bridge in Colombo, spanning the Kelani River. Completed in 2021, this six-lane bridge stretches 380m across the Kelani River and was built with advanced technology, making it Sri Lanka’s first extradosed bridge. It plays a vital role in easing heavy traffic between Colombo City, the international airport and the port, improving connectivity and economic growth. Beyond its practical importance, the bridge’s elegant design and impressive lighting have made it a new architectural landmark and a point of pride for the city.
