Kanakarayan Aru, a picturesque river in Sri Lanka’s Northern region, stretches approximately 86km, rising from the Eastern Vavuniya District and flowing through the scenic landscapes of Mullaitivu before merging with the Chundikkulam Lagoon. The river is an essential resource for local communities, supporting both agriculture and fisheries, with Paddy cultivation being a key industry in the area. The river’s waters sustain a rich variety of life, including fish species like Tilapia and Catfish, which thrive in its flow. The surrounding vegetation is equally diverse, with Palmyra Palms and Mangroves lining the banks, offering shelter to a wide range of bird species, including Kingfishers and Herons. These ecosystems contribute to the river's ecological significance.

Kanakarayan Aru is also known for its dramatic seasonal transformations. During the monsoon season, heavy rains can significantly alter the river’s flow, creating stunning landscapes that captivate nature lovers and photographers. This ever-changing river serves not only as a vital resource for the people who depend on it but also as a natural wonder, showcasing the beauty and dynamism of Sri Lanka’s Northern region.
