Mahaweli Ganga is more than just a river– it is the lifeblood of Sri Lanka, weaving through the island with both beauty and purpose. Spanning an impressive 335km, this longest river of Sri Lanka begins its journey in the misty Horton Plains in the Central Highlands and flows to the Indian Ocean at Trincomalee, passing through a basin that covers nearly one-fifth of the island's area. Along its path, Mahaweli Ganga nurtures rich ecosystems, supporting everything from towering Bamboo forests to colourful Orchids. These diverse habitats are home to unique wildlife, including the rare Green Labeo fish and the elusive Fishing Cat, a stealthy hunter that prowls along the riverbanks.

Beyond its natural beauty, Mahaweli Ganga is a cornerstone of Sri Lanka’s agricultural and economic landscape. Its waters feed sprawling Rice paddies and iconic Tea plantations, supporting the livelihoods of thousands of farmers. Additionally, Mahaweli Ganga is central to the Mahaweli Development Project, powering hydroelectric plants that generate a significant portion of the island’s electricity. This mighty river is a source of sustenance, energy, and natural wonder, truly embodying the spirit of Sri Lanka.
