Deduru Oya, a river integral to both agriculture and natural beauty, flows serenely for 142km from Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands to the Northwestern coast. Essential for the region’s irrigation, it supports expansive Paddy fields and thriving Coconut plantations, making it a true lifeline for local farming communities.

The river’s banks are adorned with vibrant greenery, featuring clusters of Tropical Hardwoods, resilient Bamboo groves, and fertile farmlands. These lush surroundings create a rich ecosystem that provides a home for various wildlife. Water Monitors and Frogs can often be spotted near the river, while its waters teem with Freshwater Fish species such as Catla and Labeo. Birds, including colourful Kingfishers and graceful Cormorants, are frequent visitors to Deduru Oya’s tranquil shores, making it an excellent destination for birdwatching enthusiasts.

With its blend of agricultural importance and diverse biodiversity, Deduru Oya is more than a river - it’s a vital resource and a beautiful natural haven, inviting exploration and admiration from all who visit
