Gal Oya, an essential river in Sri Lanka, flows 108km from the Central Highlands to the Eastern coast, ultimately meeting the Indian Ocean at Kalmunai. Its rich biodiversity makes it an ecological treasure, providing a haven for species like the endangered Sri Lankan Elephant and the elusive Fishing Cat, both of which rely on the river’s unique ecosystems.

The riverbanks are adorned with vibrant surroundings such as forests, shrubs and grasslands, which contribute to the area’s beauty while offering shelter to various bird species like Cormorants and Grey Heron. This diverse flora and fauna create a balanced environment that supports both terrestrial and aquatic life.

Gal Oya is also critical to the local agricultural economy, particularly in the surrounding Rice-growing regions. Its waters provide necessary irrigation, allowing farmers to cultivate crops in the dry zone. The river flows through the scenic Gal Oya National Park, a prime destination for nature lovers, where visitors can witness the river’s serene landscapes and the wildlife that depends on it, making it a true natural gem.
