DIMO 800 – Mercedes-Benz Center of Excellence certified LEED Gold
DIMO has once again affirmed their ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship by successfully obtaining USGBC (United States Green Building Council) LEED Gold Certification for the new DIMO 800 – Mercedes-Benz Center of Excellence, a fully integrated automobile showroom and service center in Colombo. The building is the first site in South Asia to achieve this prestigious level of certification for this building category and the second in Asia. This is a momentous milestone for DIMO, the first company to have a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified building in the city of Colombo for the Bosch Service Center in 2012, and is now the only company with two LEED Certified buildings within Colombo.
The new Center of Excellence offers the true Mercedes-Benz experience in an ambience of luxury and sophistication. At a total cost of Rs. 2.5 billion, it is the largest investment in an automobile center in Sri Lanka. It has an area of 25,748m2 within an ingeniously designed building comprising of showrooms, lounge areas, cafés, training rooms, a 300-seat auditorium, a Mercedes-Benz museum and much more. The after-sales facility consists of 85 work bays with state-of-the-art tools and equipment.
Right from the onset, the management of DIMO unanimously decided to pursue a green building concept for the Center that would minimize their impact on the environment. This decision was made in-line with the company’s sustainability policy which is to “create stakeholder value while reducing the footprint throughout its entire value chain”. Therefore the Center has been designed with an emphasis on minimizing impact during construction while maximizing energy and water efficiency during the building’s operational lifetime. It employs the latest green technology such as a highly energy efficient chiller system together with high-efficiency HVAC equipment, LED lighting, a sophisticated centralized building management system, solar-heat-gain-reducing glass, passive shading devices, rain water harvesting, a water treatment plant, water-efficient fixtures, a drip irrigation system to minimize treated water use for landscape irrigation, as well as many more green features. Together, these design features make the building 33% more energy efficient than an equivalent building built to ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers) 90.1-2007 standards and more than 42% more water efficient.
To certify that DIMO 800 does indeed meet their environmental goals, the most recognized green building scheme worldwide was obtained. The LEED system is designed by the U.S. Green Building Council focusing on five key areas: sustainable site, water use, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality, also looking at innovation in design. DIMO engaged the services of Greenpath Energy, a Sri Lankan green building certification firm, to ensure that the new facility successfully obtained the prestigious LEED Gold Certification.
The required changes and upgrade in building systems and design in-order to meet LEED standards has brought many benefits, both tangible and intangible, for both the building as well as for DIMO. These benefits will accrue over the entire building lifecycle. It is a testament to DIMO’s commitment to the upholding of its integrity and commitment to service excellence while minimizing its environmental impact at all times. The opening of this Center represents the dawn of a new age for Mercedes-Benz and DIMO services in Sri Lanka while highlighting DIMO’s deep sense of responsibility towards our environment and society at large.
