DIMO supports “Living with Wild Elephants”

June 24, 2015

On the 09th of June 2015, DIMO celebrated the launch of the latest book by world renowned wildlife veterinarian, Dr. Vijitha Perera at the DIMO 800 – Mercedes-Benz Center of Excellence. The book describes the extraordinary work of Dr. Vijitha Perera in rescuing, relocating and treating elephants through addictive stories described with great compassion and love of these wonderful animals. Over 100 invited guests attended the launch including the Deputy Minister of Tourism & Sports, Mr. Vasantha Senanayake, Chairman of Heritage TV, Mr. Hema Nalin Karunaratne, the Mercedes-Benz and Jeep Clubs together with Mr. Ranjith Pandithage and other DIMO Tribe members.

An inspirational presentation on the plight faced by elephants in the wild and Dr. Perera’s work was conducted by the author and Mr. Hema Nalin Karunaratne. This was followed by the launch of the new book along with the handing over of copies to distinguished invitees. Mr. Ranjith Pandithage and the Deputy Minister also addressed the gathering. A constant barrage of external threats challenge the ability of elephants to survive and reproduce. The loss of their natural habitat through land clearing for pastoral purposes, urban development and agriculture, if not addressed immediately can result in an absolute loss of this endangered species. “Our hope is that through this inspirational book, that every Sri Lankan from every generation recognizes the importance of protecting these majestic creatures.” – Mr. Ranjith Pandithage.
