Renewable energy sources like solar generate only a fluctuating electricity in nature, even though they are more than sufficient to meet the entire country’s need. In off-grid power systems, electricity generated from solar should be stored in battery storages so that the stored electricity can be utilised whenever it is required. Even in on-grid solar PV systems, inverters are automatically switched off during power outages as a safety feature. This is to stop utility workers from getting electrocuted when they work on the electrical lines during power outages. Therefore, battery storages are increasingly used in on-grid systems as well to power up the appliances during power outages. The largest energy storage for a solar PV system was installed by DIMO at University of Moratuwa. It is a Lithium Battery Storage of 400kWh. DIMO can design, supply, install and commission an advance battery storage based on the customer requirement.

Micro Grids allow the consumers to generate their own power with solar panels, wind turbines hand in hand with diesel generators without depending on the national grid. DIMO launched Sri Lanka’s first ever grid tied renewable energy micro grid pilot project with 375kW solar PV capacity and an energy storage of 400kWh at the University of Moratuwa to provide an uninterrupted electricity supply in 2022. The project was funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

As part of our commitment to sustainability, DIMO has installed roof-mounted solar PV systems to power its own establishments such as the state-of-the-art Mercedes showroom, workshops at Weliweriya and several other premises, which generate approximately 1.75MW of solar power in total. We also own a 1MW ground mounted solar PV plant, installed by us in Embilipitiya which was commissioned as a part of 1MW x60 solar PV ground mounted Project initiated by Ceylon Electricity Board.
